Flavorful and comforting curry spices, beef and chana dal served with white rice and fresh cilantro.
1 1/2 pounds steak sirloin beef tips, cut into 3/4" chunks
2 tablespoons canola/vegetable oil, divided
1 onion, finely diced
1-2 tablespoons curry powder, to taste
6 cloves garlic, pressed in garlic press
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, finely minced or grated
2 cups chana dal/yellow split peas
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 1/2 cups pureed tomatoes
5 cups water
For serving: fresh chopped cilantro and basmati rice
With Instant Pot set to Saute high, brown the meat in two batches with canola oil (1 tablespoon per batch). Reserve on a plate.
Set the Instant Pot to Saute medium and add the onion. Cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add the curry powder, garlic and ginger and cook for one minute for the flavors to develop.
Add the chana dal, sea salt, pureed tomatoes and water. Stir together well. Cover the Instant Pot and set to Pressure Cook High for 15 minutes. Immediately release pressure at the end of 15 minutes.
Check seasoning and add more salt or curry powder as desired. Serve with cooked basmati rice and garnish with fresh cilantro.d
